Nicoli has been at UCT since 1991. She has a doctorate from Oxford (on 'Wages, Profits and Apartheid'). Her research interests include unemployment and economic policy in South Africa, the political economy of antiretroviral treatment, AIDS policy and AIDS denialism in South Africa. Nicoli is a member of the AIDSTruth.org team, a website dedicated to combating AIDS denialism.

The AIDS and Society Research Unit supports research into the social and economic dimensions of AIDS in South and Southern Africa. Special emphasis is placed exploring the interface qualitative and quantitative research. Focus areas include AIDS policy in South Africa, AIDS stigma, the social and economic factors driving HIV infection, global health citizenship and leadership and the impact of providing antiretroviral treatment on individuals and households. The Director of ASRU is Prof Nicoli Nattrass.
