Schools performing above demographic expectations (SPADE): An initial research design

Presenter(s): Ursula Hoadley and Jaamia Galant

Venue: CSSR Seminar Room (4.89 Leslie Social Science)

Abstract / Description:

The SPADE research project focuses on primary schools in poor communities in the Western Cape that are performing above expectations (given their socio-economic contexts) on the numeracy and literacy systemic learner tests. The Project is interested in what factors contribute to the better performance in these schools. Existing research already suggests that many of the contributing factors of better performance in schools lie at the level of the school, or the community, but SPADE hypothesises that some of these are classroom-level effects, or a combination of school, community and classroom effects. The seminar will present the initial research design for the project, raising questions around the proposed methodological approach, school selection and the emerging conceptual framework of data source does not significantly affect this finding. *Refreshments will be served.*
