2016 Summer School cancelled

28 Oct 2016 - 19:11

For about ten years the CSSR together with Afrobarometer have held an annual Summer School in applied social science research methods applied to political and social issues facing contemporary Africa. Several hundred mostly junior researchers from universities and research organizations across Africa, as well as UCT post graduate students, have participated. Our Summer Schools are generously supported by, inter alia, the Andrew Mellon Foundation.
This year we have regrettably decided that we are unable to hold our annual Summer School.
Classes at UCT have been shut down since mid-September due to protests by a small but sometimes violent group of protesters. These protests have severely affected the CSSR's administrative processes. Some protesters appear to have no real interest in negotiating an end to the shutdown. Under the circumstances, we feel that we cannot guarantee that Summer School instruction would not be disrupted or participants otherwise adversely affected. We have explored the possibility of holding the Summer School off campus, but have concluded that we are simply not in the position to provide the additional administrative support that such an effort would require.
We plan to resume our Summer Schools next year.
